Allen Sweigart, known to many as “Turtle,” formerly of Paradise, died Tuesday, December 5. He was a resident of Hamilton Arms Center. He was 90. Allen was the husband of the late Betty (Horn) Sweigart, who preceded him in 2006 after 56 years of marriage.
He served with the Merchant Marine during WWII. He was a fireman on several Liberty Ships.
Allen was a heavy equipment operator, and worked for the former McMinn’s Asphalt Co. for 50 years.
He enjoyed family, playing Bingo, and flirting with the ladies.
Born in Smoketown, he was the son of the late Frederick P. and Mary Ann (Englert) Sweigart. He is survived by two daughters, Judy Bracken of Fredonia and Debra married to Lance McLane of Peach Bottom; grandchildren, Jody Sweigart, Cindy Phillips, Heather Haines, Wendi Belan and Greg Rehkugler; great-grandchildren, Jody Allen Sweigart Jr. and Jonathan Sweigart, Tristan and Lilliana Rehkugler, and Evan and Seth Haines; and his siblings, Kenneth William Sweigart of Lancaster, June M. Kohler of Smithville and Nancy Sweigart of Smoketown. He was preceded in death by his son, Allen Sweigart Jr. and his siblings, Floice Taylor and Gene Sweigart, Sr.
There will be a viewing on Saturday, December 9, 2017, from 1 until 2 PM in the Bachman Funeral Home, 7 South Decatur Street, Strasburg, PA. The funeral is 2:00 PM in the funeral home. Interment will follow in Bird-In-Hand UM Cemetery.
