E. Diane (Horn) Sebelist

E. Diane Sebelist (nee Horn) passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, September 19, 2017. Born on November 21, 1941 in Lancaster, PA, she was a daughter of the late Henry Paul Horn and Marian Agnes (Seasholtz) Horn. She recently celebrated 55 years of marriage to her husband, J. Robert Sebelist, and is survived by her children John R. Sebelist II of Lancaster, PA and Daphne E. Klahr of Reading, PA; and granddaughters Jillian G. Sebelist and Katherine G. Sebelist of Lancaster, PA; and her beloved dog, Teddy.  She is also survived by a brother, Gerald T. Horn of Lancaster, a sister Marilyn Jean King of Honey Brook, and was predeceased by her sister, Marian Jane Ford formerly of Honey Brook, and her brother, Richard S. Gundaker formerly of Lancaster.

Diane was known for her strong work ethic, loyalty to friends and family, having an amazing green thumb, and her delicious cooking.  Her chicken pot pie was her family’s favorite meal, with her soups and salmon loaf coming in close second.  She loved flowers and gardening, and had an uncanny sense of color combinations that made her flower planters absolutely stunning – especially the red and purple ones!

For over 30 years, she and her husband owned and operated their own produce company with locations at Root’s Country Market, New Eastern Market, and the Strasburg Farm Market on Route 896.  Additionally, Strasburg residents could always find the best flowers at Easter and Mother’s Day from her flower tent, which was colorfully arranged and inviting.  She was known for her beautiful fruit baskets which she made every Christmas season with her best friend, Gerri, by her side wrapping and tying on handmade bows.

Diane read the newspaper every day, and often clipped recipes to send to her daughter, and always saved articles and pictures featuring her friends and family members.

She was a 1960 graduate of J.P. McCaskey High School and was self-employed until retiring in 2013.  Diane – wife, mom, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, cousin and friend – will be missed by many and never forgotten.

A memorial service in Diane’s honor will be held Monday, October 2, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. at the Bachman Funeral Home, 7 South Decatur St., Strasburg, PA.  Following the service, there will be a dinner for friends and family at David and Steve’s Fireside Tavern, 1500 Historic Drive, Strasburg.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Strasburg Jaycee Park, PO Box 45, Strasburg, PA  17579 or to the Humane League of Lancaster County, 2195 E. Lincoln Highway, Lancaster, PA  17602.

  1. Diane was a lovely neighbor – we have missed seeing her these last years but she was always kind and loving person. Her dog Teddy adored her and was such an obedient boy when she was around. She was a great neighbor. I am sorry for the neighborhood and family’s loss.
