Ann Louise Bachman, 61, of Landis Homes and formerly of Friendship Communities, died at Lancaster General Hospital on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late John and Norma Leaman Bachman. Ann Louise was a member of Church of the Apostles U.C.C. in Lancaster. She is survived by her sister Mary Ellen Bachman of Lancaster. Her brother John Bachman, Jr. preceded Ann Louise in death. Paul H. Benner Jr., 76, of Willow Street, died peacefully at Lancaster General Hospital on Monday, April 14th, 2008. He was the husband of Shirley A. Griest Benner, for 54 years. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Paul H. Sr. and Elsie Hartman Benner. Paul was a 1949 graduate of J.P. McCaskey High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict at the rank of Corporal. He was employed by former Gunzenhauser and Holsum Bakery for 22 years. He was then employed by Tasty Baking Co. for 22 years, the last 7 years as a franchise owner. After retiring, he was employed by the Strasburg Railroad for 12 years. Most recently, Paul was employed by Wiley's Pharmacy of Strasburg as a delivery person. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Lancaster, for 47 years, where he served on church council and as an usher. In earlier years, he played on the church softball team. Paul had a lifelong interest in railroading, travel and golf. He was an avid Eagles, Phillies, and Flyers fan. His happiest moments were spent with his family. Surviving in addition to his wife is a daughter, Debra, wife of Charles "Chuck" Wolf Jr., Lancaster; a son, Donald Paul, husband of Theresa Benner, Akron. His grandchildren Heather Wolf-Plourde, fiancé of Jesse Storm, Charles R. " Chad" Wolf III, Logan Smith, Blake Smith and Kelsie Smith and one great-granddaughter, Latasha Storm. He is also survived by a sister, Marian, wife of Leon Scott of Landisville. Gladys G. Doutrich, 93, of Conestoga View and formerly of Kinzers, died at Lancaster General Hospital on Monday, March 31. She was the widow of Wilmer A. Doutrich, who died in 1986. A seamstress, Gladys worked at many former sewing factories, including Zimmerman's, Hershey Garment and Singing Needles. She was a long time member of Calvary Monument Bible Church. She had been active with Kinzer Fire Company Auxiliary. Born in Vintage, she was the daughter of the late Jefferson Davis and Mary Emma Troop Gregg. She is survived by a son, Ronald W. married to Gere L. Reisinger Doutrich, grandchildren, Lori L. married to Barry Kreider of Pequea, Kevin R. Doutrich of Conestoga and Scott M. Doutrich of Leola and 8 great-grandchildren. Gladys was preceded in death by a sister, Wilda Yohn, brothers, Lloyd, Truman and Veryle Gregg. Kenneth E. Harnish, 79, of Strasburg, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, April 11, 2008. He was the husband of the late M. Arlene Book Harnish, who died last April. Ken worked as millwright for Armstrong World Industries in Lancaster for over 30 years. Along with Arlene he tended a stand at the former Meadowbrook Farmers Market. He was a member of Calvary Monument Bible Church, Paradise. Ken enjoyed fishing, hunting and watching the Phillies. Born in Willow Street, he was the son of the late Samuel and Jennie Dombach Harnish. Surviving are his daughter Linda S. married to Larry Lutz of Manheim, two sons, Jeffrey K. married to Donna Harnish of Marietta and Ted D. Harnish of Strasburg, two grandsons, Joshua and Christopher Lutz of Manheim, and a brother, A. Laverne "Pete" married to Miriam Harnish of Witmer. He was preceded in death by a brother, S. Mary Ann Henry, 91, formerly of Strasburg, died Saturday, March 29, 2008, at the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community. Born in Martic Twp., she was the daughter of the late Lester M., Sr. and Elizabeth Byers Henry. Mary Ann first worked as a dispatcher for the former Neff's Taxi and then as a receptionist at the former Lancaster Osteopathic Hospital. A member of Lampeter United Methodist Church, she formerly belonged to Wesley United Methodist Church in Strasburg. She enjoyed doing crochet, staying in her cottage at Rawlinsville Camp Meeting and driving to Burger King. Surviving are her brother Lester M., Jr., husband of Frances Lapp Simpson Henry of Paradise; sisters-in-law Ann Henry of New Providence and Julie Ann Christ of Lancaster; and many nieces and nephews. Her brothers Clair, Harrison, Samuel, Walter and Wilbur Henry preceded Mary Ann in death.

Ann E. Lantz, 68, died peacefully at her home in Ronks on Monday, March 24, 2008. She and her husband Samuel F. Lantz observed their 50th wedding anniversary on March 22nd. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Paul A., Sr. and Rosemarie Strosser Weiler. Ann enjoyed her work as a bookkeeper for Keystone Wood Specialties for the last 25 years. She enjoyed reading and spending time at the family mountain cabin with her grandchildren. She was raised in the Catholic Faith. In addition to her husband Samuel, Ann is survived by her sons Rick D., husband of Patricia Rauba Lantz and Randy husband of Dede Mahoney Lantz, both of Strasburg; granddaughters Jen and Alexa Lantz; her sisters Rosalia Ingram of Delaware and Theresa, wife of Carl Hart of Lancaster; and her half-brother William, husband of Irene Horn of Lancaster. Lucille E. Lefever, 84, entered into rest at her home in Strasburg on Tuesday, April 29, 2008. Born in Strasburg, she was the daughter of the late Roy A. and Edna Welk Harnish. Lucille graduated from Strasburg High School. She worked as a medical secretary at Lancaster General Hospital, before owning and operating The Sewing Basket in Strasburg, and then she was a clerk for Zimmerman's Hardware. A member of First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, she previously sang in the choir, was a soloist and junior choir director. She was active in the auxiliaries of the Paul Strubel V.F.W. Post #8710, Strasburg and the Conestoga Chapter P.O.W. Lucille enjoyed sewing reading, cooking and spending time with her grandchildren. Lucille is survived by her husband of 61 years, Paul W. Lefever; her children, Tessa, wife of Lloyd Lefever, Jr. of Lancaster, Jeffrey, husband of Lesa Korns Lefever of Strasburg, and Tamara, wife of Alan Scheurich of Lancaster; 7 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; her brother Richard Harnish of Strasburg; and her sister Edith Reimold of Paradise. Robert C. "Bob" Pontz, 92, of North Decatur Street, Strasburg, died at home on Wednesday, April 9, following a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of Marie Helm Pontz for over 72 years as well as a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Bob retired from RCA where he worked in various managerial positions over a long career. He was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, where he had served as Trustee and Elder. Bob was active with the Strasburg Lions Club and received a Melvin Jones Fellowship Award from the club. An avid golfer, he was a member of Meadia Heights Country Club. Bob loved rose gardening and was known in Strasburg as "Mr. Rose." Born in Strasburg Township, he was the son of the late William R. and Adda Zittle Pontz. Bob is survived by 2 sons, R. George married to Jean Steller Pontz and Thomas H. married to Sidney Clark Pontz, both of Strasburg, 6 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, W. Esther G. Shaub, 86, died peacefully at her home in Strasburg on Friday, January 25, 2008. Her husband of 62 years, the late Samuel S. Shaub, died in January 2006. A graduate of J.P. McCaskey High School, Esther had been a beautician at the former Alfred's Beauty Salon in Lancaster. An active Strasburg resident, she was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Paul R. Strubel V.F.W. Post #8710 Auxiliary and she planned many trips for the Strasburg Senior Citizens. Esther loved tending her flower garden and earlier in life she enjoyed bowling. Born in Holtwood, she was the daughter of the late Harry C. and Miriam Hertzler Greider Harner. Esther's family includes three daughters, Sandy, wife of Michael C. Groff, Becky Jo, wife of Michael F. Perry and Pamela, wife of James F. Rice, all of Strasburg; five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. She was the last of her immediate family. Ned D. Taylor, 75, of Intercourse and formerly of Jenkintown, died unexpectedly while on vacation in Saint Martin, West Indies, on Thursday, April 17, 2008. He was husband of Joan P. Martin Taylor for the last 18 years. Born in Camden, NJ, Ned was the son of the late Edwin and Thelma Mae Fuller Taylor. A graduate of Penn State University, he served in the US Army in Korea near the end of the Korean War. Ned had worked as the human resource director for Rhom and Hass in Philadelphia. A member of Highland Presbyterian Church, he served as an Elder, sang in the choir, volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and went on mission trips to rebuild homes following disasters. He performed with the Jenkintown Music Theatre for 30 years and with the Abington Choral Club. Ned served on the Intercourse Library Board, was the voluntary CEO for Livengrin Foundation for Addiction Recovery and he was a member of KPETS. Surviving in addition to his wife Joan, are his children, Scott F., married to Shari Taylor of Phelan, CA, Martha T. Scache of Glenside, PA, and Evelyn B. Taylor of Collingswood, NJ; stepchildren, Theodore S., married to Fran Lyon of Emigsburg, PA, Timothy R., married to Amber Lyon of Ephrata, PA, and Traci M. The family of Marian "Marmee" Ware shares with you that she died peacefully at her home in Strasburg Township, Pennsylvania at 91 years of age. Her daughters, sons and some of her grandchildren were with her in the days before her passing. A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, May 2 at 2:00 PM at the Oxford Presbyterian Church, 6 Pine Street, Oxford, PA 19363. You are welcome to join her family at this service. Marian Snyder Ware, 91 of Strasburg, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2008 at the home of her daughter following a long illness. Her husband, the late Congressman John H. Ware 3rd preceded her in death. Previously Congressman and Mrs. Ware spent over 55 years of their married lives as residents of Oxford, Pa. She was born in Titusville, Pa. and was one of three daughters of Dr. C. Paul Snyder and his wife Adelaide who resided in Lansdowne and Philadelphia, Pa. Mrs. Ware was widely know as a philanthropist and activist who supported a wide variety of charities, including a number of initiatives which supported the advancement's of women's causes, medical and scientific research in diabetes and Alzheimer's disease, and charities which provided services for people with special needs. Unbeknownst to anyone, Mrs. Ware encouraged and supported the education of dozens of young women who advanced to become nurse's aides, nurses and physicians. She was a strong advocate and supporter of effective farmland preservation in both Lancaster and Chester Counties and of the preservation of endangered species. She maintained a lifelong interest in both Boy and Girl Scouts, having served as both a den mother and senior Girl Scout leader. She was active in supporting her alma mater, Swarthmore College, where she was a swimmer and hockey player. Mrs. Ware was an adventurous traveler who went on two safari's in Africa, rafted down the Colorado River and toured throughout Europe. She was a member of the Oxford Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Ware was surrounded by her children and grandchildren in the last days of her life. She is survived by her four children; John H. Ware IV of Oxford; Ambassador Marilyn Ware of Strasburg; Paul W. Ware of Lancaster, married to Judy Schoenly Ware; and Carol Ware Gates of Christiana. Her other descendants include twelve grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.
Jeffrey Ryan "Whitey" Weitzel, 18, passed away on Saturday April 12 2008, at his home in Lampeter, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family and friends. Born in Lancaster he was the son of Jeffrey K. and Penny L. Shumake Weitzel. Whitey was a senior at Lampeter-Strasburg High School. He had played for the L-S football team and he had a passion for lacrosse, having played with the L-S boy's lacrosse team since the club first began. Even though he was unable to continue playing, Whitey coached the junior varsity lacrosse team when he was able to attend their games. He worked as a vendor for Jet Services, Inc. at Lancaster Barnstormers games and for Baltimore Ravens games in M&T Bank Stadium. Whitey enjoyed music, driving, going out to eat and being with his friends. He was very fond of the girls who would take him out for ice cream. Golf was another one of his loves, with his father teaching him how to play the game. When asked about Whitey, Lampeter Strasburg High School Principal Carroll J. Staub said, "The impact that Ryan "Whitey" Weitzel has had on the L-S community has been nothing short of amazing. He has inspired the entire school with his courage, determination, and attitude about life. Whitey has brought the L-S High School together like nothing else has for several years. While he is physically gone, his legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of everyone whose life has been touched by this amazing young man." Lampeter-Strasburg Boy's Lacrosse Club President and coach Joe Frank said, "Ryan was the inspirational leader of our team for the past few years. He approached lacrosse like he did life with courage and enthusiasm, and a genuine love for his teammates. He was a remarkable young man and we will sorely miss him. He inspired our team, our school and our community." In addition to his mom and dad, Ryan is survived by his paternal grandparents, Tom and Ann Weitzel of Oxford; his sister Ashley, married to Christopher Stringer, and his niece Madison "Madi" Stringer all of Strasburg; his uncle Rodney, married to Denise Weitzel and their A Celebration of Life to be held in the Performing Arts Center at Lampeter-Strasburg High School will be announced at a later date. Marlin E. Wenger MD, FACP, 68, of Manheim Township, passed away at the Essa Flory Hospice Center on Saturday, April 26, 2008, after a two year struggle with pancreatic cancer. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Jane Arlene Idell Wenger. Marlin was born in Paradise, Pennsylvania, on November 9, 1939 to Samuel Stoner and Ella Mae Esbenshade Wenger. He graduated from Pequea Valley High School in 1957 and was elected to the inaugural Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001. Marlin went onto Goshen College, Goshen, Indiana, where he and his brother, Sam, helped institute the soccer program, serving as coach of the 1959 team. After graduating from Goshen College, Marlin attended Temple University School of Medicine and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Society. A rotating internship followed at Lancaster General Hospital. For two years, he served as a house officer in Adult Medicine and Pediatrics at Glenwood Hills Hospital, Minneapolis, Minnesota, in fulfillment of his military service obligation. Marlin received his residency training in Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, followed by a fellowship in Rheumatology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. In 1972, Marlin received board certification in Rheumatology and Internal Medicine, the inaugural group of Rheumatologists to be certified in this country. The following year, he established a clinical practice of Rheumatology in Lancaster, which developed into Lancaster Rheumatology Associates, a member of Lancaster General Medical Group. Marlin served as managing physician. He and his colleagues developed a clinical densitometry program for the evaluation and management of patients with osteoporosis. In addition to the consultative care of outpatients and hospital patients, Marlin participated in 55 pharmaceutical investigative studies and had 21 articles published in medical journals. As an active staff member at Lancaster General Hospital (LGH), Marlin served as a mentor/teacher in the Family Medicine Residency Program and in a number of administrative positions, including Chief of the Division of Rheumatology, Chair of the Institutional Review Board, Chair of the Department of Medicine, Chair of the Quality Assurance Committee, and Chair of the Medical Education Committee. From 1987-1989 he was President of the Medical and Dental Staff, having previously served two years as Vice President. He assisted with establishing the Lancaster General Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, the Trauma Unit, and the purchase of 25 acres for the development of the LGH Health Campus. In 2001, Marlin received the Henry S. Wentz MD award for outstanding contributions to LGH Graduate Medical Education and the Lancaster County Community. Marlin was a member of the American College of Physicians and Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the Pennsylvania Medical Society, the Lancaster County Medical Society, the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, the International Society for Clinical Densitometry, the Mennonite Medical Association, the University of Michigan Rheumatology Society, and the Pennsylvania Osteoporosis Society. He was a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) and the American College of Rheumatology. Marlin served in executive offices of the American Society of Clinical Rheumatology and on the Governor's Task Force on Arthritis, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. During the 33 years of his medical practice, Marlin held the title of Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine of Temple University. Since 1973, he served on the Board of Directors for the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation and was President, 1979-1980. Marlin attended St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lancaster, where he was a member of the choir and served as Church Council Member, 1997-2000. He was a member of the Mill Creek Hunting Club. Marlin enjoyed fishing, woodworking, listening to classical music and opera, and vacationing on the Outer Banks, NC. He was a long time supporter of the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra and other civic organizations. In addition to his wife, Marlin is survived by his children, Brent I. married to Pamela D. Wenger of Lancaster, Maria K. Wenger married to Adam W. Kois, Jr., of Fanwood, NJ, Chad I. Wenger of Dania Beach, FL, and grandchildren, Robert C. Wenger, Luke I. Wenger and Graham W. Kois. He is also survived by two brothers, Samuel E. married to Ruth Wenger of Akron, PA, Richard E. Wenger of Herndon, VA and two sisters, Sally married to Charles B. On Monday, April 28, our mother Arlene (Fry) Winters, 80, went to heaven after a lengthy illness. She died peacefully in the arms of her husband Mearl. They recently celebrated 62 years of marriage. Born in Lancaster, Arlene spent retirement years with her husband in Altamonte Springs, FL, and lived the past 4 years with their daughter in Macon, GA. Arlene enjoyed cooking, gardening and a love for chocolate. Her strength and unconditional love were huge. In addition to Mearl, Arlene is survived by 5 children, Suzanne Fiorenza, wife of Salvatore, of Egg Harbor Twp, NJ, "Skip" Winters and wife Connie, of Buck, PA, Patty Winters of Lancaster, Ann Rineer, wife of Rick, of Strasburg, and Peggy Thompson, wife of Zan, of Macon, GA. Arlene is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Ashlea, Amy, and Rick Rineer, Lisa Geist, Sal Fiorenza, and Courtney Winters, two great grandchildren, Gavin and Elizabeth Geist and 4 sisters, Pat Carvell, Estella Hagmann, Nancy Carello and Joanne Gammache. A private ceremony was held in the gardens of her Georgia home.

Bertha J. Zimmerman, 78, formerly of Paradise Lane, Paradise, died at Lancashire Hall on Friday, April 25, following a long illness. A seamstress, she had worked for various sewing factories and retired from Elite Apparel. She loved poodles and playing Bingo. She also enjoyed flower gardening and bird watching. Born in Holtwood, she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Annie Lane Cooper. Bertha is survived by 2 sons, James L. Zimmerman of Paradise and John A. Zimmerman of Ronks. She was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Cooper and 3 sisters, Gladys Boatzman, Esther Moyer and Erma Kauffman. |
